Top Entry Agitator

Top Entry Agitator

A Top Entry Agitator (also known as a top-mounted agitator or top entry mixer) is an industrial mixing device mounted vertically from the top of a tank or vessel. It is the most common and widely used type of agitator in industrial applications, preferred for batch, continuous, and semi-continuous stirred tanks.

The agitator consists of:

  • A drive unit (motor and gearbox/reducer) mounted on top.

  • A vertical shaft extending into the tank.

  • One or more impellers attached to the shaft to create flow and mixing.

It is typically installed at the centerline of the tank (often with baffles for optimal flow), though it can be offset, angled, or eccentric based on process needs.

Key Advantages

  • Ease of maintenance: Can be removed from the top without draining the tank or vessel entry.

  • Efficient mixing: Better energy distribution and shear, leading to homogeneous results.

  • Lower contamination risk: Less exposure to bottom sediments.

  • Versatility: Suitable for sealed/pressurized tanks, high-viscosity fluids, and a wide range of processes.

  • Lower power needs compared to side-entry alternatives in many cases.

Common Applications

Used in industries like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, mining, wastewater, paints/resins, and biotechnology for tasks such as blending, solids suspension, homogenization, heat transfer, and reactions.

Comparison to Side Entry Agitators

  • Top entry: Better for consistent mixing in cylindrical tanks with moderate height-to-diameter ratios; easier maintenance; more uniform flow.

  • Side entry: Used for very large/wide tanks, low headroom, or sludge prevention; often requires higher power and tank draining for maintenance.
