Sigma Blade Mixer

Description

A Sigma Blade Mixer, also commonly referred to as a Sigma Mixer, Z-Blade Mixer, or Double Arm Kneader, is a robust industrial mixing machine specifically engineered for handling high-viscosity materials. These powerful kneaders excel at blending thick, sticky, and heavy substances that standard mixers simply cannot process effectively. From dense pastes and heavy doughs to industrial adhesives, rubber compounds, sealants, and specialty chemicals, the Sigma Blade Mixer delivers consistent, homogeneous results every time.

The heart of a Sigma Mixer lies in its distinctive sigma-shaped (or Z-shaped) blades. These two counter-rotating blades operate at different speeds within a trough-shaped mixing chamber, creating a highly effective kneading, folding, and shearing action. This dual-arm mechanism ensures thorough dispersion of ingredients, breaking down agglomerates and achieving uniform consistency even with extremely viscous products. Unlike planetary mixers or ribbon blenders, the Double Arm Kneader is purpose-built for materials with viscosities that would overwhelm conventional equipment.

Working Principle of Sigma Blade Mixer

Blending Kinematics & Thermal Automation

  • Counter-Rotational Kneading: Dual Sigma (‘Z’) profile rotors revolve synchronously at calibrated differential speeds toward each other, driving the mass longitudinally through a continuous cycle of shifting, stretching, folding, splitting, and re-fusion.
  • Particle Diminution: High-stress friction, shearing, and ripping forces generated between the moving impellers and interior chamber walls efficiently break down solid agglomerates.
  • Automated Thermal Transitions: Once the mandatory batch sterilization timeframe concludes, the heating circuit powers down, the pneumatic exhaust vent opens automatically, and the cooling sequence initiates.

Batch Extraction Methods

Completed product can be unloaded through three distinct ejection pathways:

  • Tilting the entire mixing trough
  • Draining via bottom-situated dump valves
  • Extruding through a lateral side-mounted screw mechanism

Rotor Architectures & Viscosity Matrix

Side-by-Side (Tangential) Layout

  • Operational Setup: Non-intersecting blades revolving adjacently at unequal velocities, typically maintaining a 3:2 speed proportion (with the lead blade traveling faster than the rear).
  • Target Applications: Heavy, high-viscosity formulations including industrial adhesives, heavy rubberized compounds, flush colors, chemical dyes, and dense pigments.

Intersecting (Overlapping) Layout

  • Operational Setup: Blades that cross paths directly above the central vessel ridge, requiring absolute phase synchronization and matching rotational speeds to accelerate cross-compartment transfer.
  • Target Applications: Free-flowing, fluid, or creeping substances such as carbon pastes, ceramic clay coatings, cosmetic creams, and pharmaceutical ointments.
  • Shear Characteristic: Delivers a significantly milder kneading and tearing intensity relative to the tangential configuration.

Key Features of Sigma Blade Mixer

It features a W-shaped or double-trough mixing bowl with two sigma-shaped blades (resembling the Greek letter Σ) mounted horizontally. These blades rotate in opposite directions, often at different speeds (one typically 1.5–2 times faster than the other), creating intense shearing, kneading, folding, pulling, and compressing actions. The blades have low clearance to the trough walls (about 2–3 mm), generating high shear forces for thorough blending.

FAQ for Sigma Blade Mixer

Tangential ‘Z’ blades (front blade faster, typically 3:2 ratio) are suited for higher-viscosity materials like adhesives and rubber compounds, providing strong kneading and shearing. Overlapping blades (same speed) offer faster material interchange and are better for lighter viscosities such as creams, ointments, and carbon pastes, though with comparatively lower kneading intensity.

Discharge can be achieved through manual hand wheel tilting, hydraulic automatic tilting, bottom valves, or an extrusion screw system. Additional options include automatic valve discharge systems for efficient product removal.

Yes. A jacketed trough supports heating (via steam, hot water, or electric heaters) and cooling (via chilled water circulation), with mineral wool insulation and cladding available for energy efficiency and temperature control during mixing.

The mixer is available in Stainless Steel 316, Stainless Steel 304, or Mild Steel. Stainless steel options come with matt or mirror polish finishes, while mild steel features red oxide primer and epoxy paint. Blade materials include AISI 1030, CF8, and CF8M, with trough gauges from 3mm to 30mm.

A minimum gap between the trough inner shell and blades reduces product stagnation. Combined with PTFE or silicon shaft seals (food-grade compatible), smooth polished surfaces, and options like easy-tilt discharge, it supports hygienic operation and straightforward cleaning, making it suitable for GMP-compliant environments.

Models range from ASM-50 (50L working capacity) to ASM-3000 (3000L working capacity). Motor horsepower varies from 5 HP (general) / 7.5 HP (heavy duty) for smaller units up to 100 HP / 120 HP for larger ones, with customization up to 250 HP and support for various power voltages.

Yes. Fixed or variable speed operation is offered, often with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD). Additional automation includes vacuum systems, liquid spray systems, screw feeding/discharge, and blades cooling arrangements to match specific process needs.

It features high-grade stainless steel construction, PTFE/silicon seals for food compatibility, mirror polish finishes, minimal stagnation gaps, and jacketed designs that support precise temperature control. These elements ensure compliance with hygienic standards and easy validation in regulated industries.

Highly customizable. Options include trough thickness, motor HP (1.5–250 HP), blade types, discharge methods (manual/hydraulic/screw), heating/cooling systems, feeding mechanisms (manual/vacuum/screw), sealing materials, finishes, and voltage configurations to suit diverse viscosities and regulatory needs.
