Manual Capsule Counter

Description

Manual Capsule Counter (also commonly called a capsule counting tray, count board, or manual capsule counting tray) is a simple, non-electric tool widely used in pharmacies, small-scale pharmaceutical production, nutraceutical labs, herbal/Ayurvedic units, and supplement packaging. It allows accurate, fast counting of filled capsules (or sometimes tablets/pills) without any digital/electronic components. It helps count exact quantities of capsules (e.g., 30, 60, 90, 100, 120, or any custom number) quickly and precisely for filling bottles, vials, plastic bags, or blister packs. It greatly reduces manual counting errors and saves time compared to counting one-by-one by hand.

  • Flat rectangular or square tray/plate (usually made of food-grade acrylic/plexiglass, aluminum, or stainless steel for GMP compliance and easy cleaning).

  • The main surface has a grid of precisely drilled holes/cavities (also called pockets or depressions).

  • Hole size and shape are customized to match a specific capsule size so only one capsule fits snugly in each hole.

  • Number of holes = exact count per batch (common models: 30-hole, 60-hole, 90-hole, 100-hole, etc.).

  • Some designs have two parts:
    • Bottom tray with holes.
    • Top frame/guide or a sliding/tilting mechanism to release the counted capsules.

  • Lightweight (often <1 kg), portable, and handheld.

  • No moving parts except manual shaking/tilting.

Working Principle of Manual Capsule Counter

  • Place the tray on a flat, clean surface.

  • Pour a quantity of capsules (more than the hole count) onto the tray.

  • Gently shake or rock the tray back and forth (sometimes in circular motion) so capsules naturally settle and fit into the holes (one per hole). Excess capsules stay on the surface.

  • Brush/sweep away or pour off the extra capsules that didn’t fit.

  • Now every filled hole = one counted capsule → total capsules = number of holes.

  • Tilt the tray, lift a release gate/slide, or flip it over a funnel/chute to drop all counted capsules directly into a bottle, bag, or container at once.

  • Repeat for the next batch.

Advantages of Manual Capsule Counter

Very accurate (almost 100% when used correctly).

Extremely low cost compared to automatic counters.

No electricity needed ideal for small batches or areas with power issues.

Easy to clean and maintain, GMP-compatible materials available.

Fast for small-to-medium volumes (far quicker than finger counting).

Key Features of Manual Capsule Counter

Automatic Disc Based Capsule Counting Machine typically feature a large rotating disc (often around 24 inches in diameter) with custom-designed pockets, holes, or cavities tailored to the specific size and shape of the capsules (e.g., hard gelatin, soft gels, oblong, round, or pearls).

  • Feeding: Capsules are loaded into a hopper. Vibration or gravity feeds them onto the rotating disc, where they settle into the individual pockets/cavities on the disc’s surface. This orients and singulates the capsules to prevent overlapping or jamming.

  • Counting via Rotation: As the disc rotates (driven by a motor/gearbox), the filled pockets pass under or through a detection/filling zone. In traditional disc-based models, the count is mechanical — each rotation or cycle dispenses a fixed number based on the number of pockets. More advanced automatic versions incorporate photoelectric sensors or scanners at the filling station to verify and count the exact pre-set quantity (e.g., 30, 60, or 100 capsules per bottle).

  • Dispensing/Filling: Once the predetermined count is reached, the capsules are released through guided chutes or nozzles directly into containers positioned below (often on a conveyor in fully automatic setups). The disc may pause or index precisely, and features like dust extractors remove particles for clean filling.

  • Automation Aspects: In fully automatic models, bottle feeding, positioning, filling, and ejection are handled without manual intervention. PLC controls, variable speed drives, and sensors ensure accuracy (often near 100%), with outputs up to 75 bottles per minute or higher depending on count size and model.

FAQ for Manual Capsule Counter

Output depends on operator efficiency, product size, and count per container. It uses custom counting discs or trays suitable for small to medium batches. It handles capsule sizes 00 to 4 and is best suited for lower-volume filling where full automation is not required. It provides consistent accuracy for small counts per container.

It is versatile for hard gelatin, soft gelatin, HPMC, and veg capsules, as well as coated/uncoated tablets. It works with various containers including bottles, jars, rigid containers, and poly bags. All product contact parts are made of high-quality Stainless Steel for GMP compliance and easy cleaning.

Salient features include:

  • Compact GMP model with a small footprint.
  • Simple manual or hand-operated counting mechanism.
  • Custom-designed counting discs/trays for different sizes and shapes.
  • Easy to operate — suitable for semi-skilled or unskilled operators.
  • All contact parts in Stainless Steel for hygiene.
  • Low maintenance and minimal power requirements.
  • Gentle handling to minimize product damage.

It requires minimal power (often standard single-phase electricity) and has no need for compressed air in basic models. Key advantages include low initial cost, portability, easy cleaning, and suitability for small batches or pharmacies. It ensures accurate counting while keeping operations simple and economical.
