A Silicone Rubber Kneader, also known as a Sigma Kneader Mixer, Z-Blade Kneader, or Dispersion Kneader, is a specialized heavy-duty industrial machine designed for mixing, kneading, and compounding high-viscosity silicone rubber materials. It is an essential piece of equipment in the silicone rubber manufacturing industry.
This robust machine features two counter-rotating sigma-shaped (Z-shaped) blades inside a sturdy mixing chamber. The powerful shearing, folding, and kneading action ensures excellent dispersion of silicone polymers with reinforcing fillers such as fumed silica, carbon black, and other additives. It effectively handles extremely high viscosities — typically ranging from 500,000 to over 1,000,000 cps — making it ideal for silicone rubber compounding.

A Silicone Rubber Kneader (also called a Sigma Kneader Mixer, Z-Blade Kneader, or Dispersion Kneader) is a heavy-duty industrial machine specifically engineered for mixing, kneading, and compounding high-viscosity silicone rubber. Unlike ordinary mixers, it uses two counter-rotating sigma-shaped (Z-shaped) blades inside a robust trough to deliver intense shearing, folding, and kneading action that effectively disperses silicone polymers with fillers such as fumed silica or carbon black, even at viscosities of 500,000–1,000,000+ cps.
The machine relies on the tangential action of two “Z”-type sigma blades that rotate toward each other at different speeds. This motion transfers material from one end of the trough to the other while combining bulk movement, stretching, folding, dividing, and recombining. The shearing and tearing against the blades and side walls also reduces solid particle size, producing a homogeneous compound.
The kneader is offered in Stainless Steel 316, Stainless Steel 304, or Mild Steel. SS surfaces can be finished to a matt or mirror polish according to customer needs. Mild-steel versions receive one coat of red oxide primer plus two coats of epoxy paint for protection.
Discharge can be performed by a hand-wheel-operated (manual) mechanism, a hydraulic (automatic) system, by tilting the entire container, through bottom valves, or via an extrusion screw mounted beside the trough—ensuring efficient removal of ultra-viscous material with minimal residue.
Yes. An optional jacket for heating or cooling can be fitted, complete with mineral-wool insulation and cladding. Blade-cooling arrangements are also available to maintain precise temperature control during compounding of heat-sensitive materials.
A minimum gap is maintained between the trough inner shell and the blades to eliminate dead zones where material could stick. PTFE shaft sealing is supplied for food-grade compatibility, and stainless-steel surfaces can be polished to the required hygienic standard.
Models span from ASM-50 (approx. 50 L working / 80 L gross capacity; 5 HP general or 7.5 HP heavy-duty) up to ASM-3000 (approx. 3000 L working / 3800 L gross capacity; 100 HP general or 120 HP heavy-duty). Power voltage can be customized to local supply requirements.
Available accessories include a liquid spray system, vacuum system (for degassing), screw extrusion system for continuous discharge, blade-cooling arrangement, and automatic valve discharge system—allowing greater process control and handling of extremely thick silicone compounds.
While optimized for silicone rubber compounding, the machine is also widely applied in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, herbal, Ayurvedic, biotech, cosmetic, and chemical industries for high-viscosity pastes, adhesives, sealants, dyes, pigments, and similar products.
Tangential blades meet at the sides of the trough and normally run at different speeds (often 3:2 ratio), delivering strong kneading and shearing ideal for high-viscosity materials such as silicone rubber compounds and adhesives. Overlapping blades rotate at the same speed above the saddle, provide faster material interchange with lower shear, and are better suited to lighter-viscosity products such as creams or carbon pastes. For silicone rubber, the tangential design is the preferred choice.
