Sigma Kneader Plastic Dispersion Mixer

Description

A Sigma Kneader Plastic Dispersion Mixer, also referred to as a Sigma Mixer, Z-Blade Mixer, or Double-Arm Kneader, is a strong, heavy-duty industrial batch mixer designed for thorough kneading, mixing, grinding, and dispersion of high-viscosity, sticky, and semi-solid materials.

This durable sigma blade mixer is built to handle tough, dough-like substances that need strong shear forces to achieve a uniform mix. It is suitable for a variety of materials, including plastics, rubber, adhesives, sealants, composites, and other viscous substances, delivering consistent, high-quality blending results with excellent dispersion and uniformity.

This mixer is especially suited for industries dealing with difficult-to-process high-viscosity formulations. It ensures efficient mixing, reduces processing time, and enhances product quality. Its key features include sturdy construction, strong torque, and effective kneading action, making it the go-to equipment for plastic dispersion, masterbatch production, and specialty chemical manufacturing.

Working Principle of Sigma Kneader Plastic Dispersion Mixer

  • Agitator Kinematics & Axial Shifting: Twin counter-rotating ‘Z’-profile (Sigma) mixing elements turn at precise differential velocities to generate a tangential wiping action, continuously conveying and redistributing the batch across the vessel length.

  • Batch Extraction Alternatives: Finished product can be unloaded by pivoting the mixing trough, releasing bottom-mounted drain valves, or driving the mass through a parallel side extrusion screw.

  • Rheological Breakdown & Homogenization: The blending process integrates bulk translation, stretching, folding, splitting, and re-mixing. Simultaneously, intense frictional shear and tearing forces generated between the rotating paddles and interior walls effectively break down solid particle aggregates.

  • Automated Thermal Transition Sequence: Once the preset batch sterilization duration finishes, the heating circuit automatically cuts off, the pneumatic exhaust flap opens, and the cooling sequence initiates.

  • Tangential Design Architecture: In this layout, the agitators spin inside the trough while meeting tangentially—typically with the front blade operating at a faster 3:2 speed ratio relative to the rear. This high-torque arrangement is optimized for dense, heavy media such as adhesives, rubber polymers, pigment pastes, and dyes.

  • Overlapping Design Architecture: The agitators intersect directly above the central divider, requiring strict synchronization so both spin at identical speeds. This accelerates cross-transfer between compartments, making it ideal for fluid or creeping substances like cosmetic creams, pharmaceutical ointments, clay coatings, and carbon pastes while exerting lower shear and kneading forces.

Key Features of Sigma Kneader Plastic Dispersion Mixer

  • Mixing Mechanism: It features two counter-rotating Z-shaped (sigma-shaped) blades in a U-shaped trough. The blades rotate at different speeds, creating a tangential folding and shearing action that transfers material from one blade to the other for excellent dispersion and homogeneity.

  • Construction: The trough and blades are typically made of mild steel or stainless steel (304/316 grades) for durability and corrosion resistance. It often includes jacketed designs for heating/cooling.

  • Discharge Options: Material is discharged by tilting the trough, bottom valves, or an extrusion screw (in advanced models).

  • Capacity: Ranges from lab-scale to large industrial models.

  • Viscosity Handling: Ideal for materials exceeding 1 million cP (centipoise), including very thick pastes and compounds.

FAQ for Sigma Kneader Plastic Dispersion Mixer

The mixer is available in Stainless Steel 316, Stainless Steel 304, and Mild Steel. Stainless steel surfaces can be polished to a matt or mirror finish as per customer requirements, while mild steel versions receive one coat of red oxide and two coats of epoxy paint.

Tangential ‘Z’-shaped (sigma) kneading blades rotate accurately at different speeds toward each other, transferring product from one end to the other. The action combines bulk movement, stretching, folding, dividing, and recombining, while shearing and tearing against the blades and side walls reduce solid particle size.

In the tangential design, the front blade generally rotates faster than the rear blade, usually in a ratio of 3:2. This design is preferred for higher-viscosity materials such as adhesives, rubber compounds, flush colors, dyes, and pigments.

Models range from ASM-50 (approx. 50 L working / 80 L gross capacity with 5 HP general or 7.5 HP heavy-duty motors) up to ASM-3000 (approx. 3000 L working / 3800 L gross capacity with 100 HP general or 120 HP heavy-duty motors). Power voltage can be adjusted to suit local requirements.

Discharge can be achieved by hand-wheel operated (manual) or hydraulic operated (automatic) systems, by tilting the container, through bottom valves, or by means of an extrusion screw beside the container.

Yes. A jacket for heating or cooling applications can be fitted, complete with mineral wool insulation and cladding. Optional blade cooling arrangements are also available for temperature-sensitive formulations.

PTFE shaft sealing is provided for food-grade compatibility. A minimum gap between the trough inner shell and the blades helps prevent product sticking, supporting clean operation.

It is widely used in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, herbal, Ayurvedic, biotech, cosmetic, and chemical industries for high-viscosity pastes, plastics, rubber, adhesives, sealants, composites, dyes, pigments, creams, ointments, and similar materials.

Available options include a liquid spray system, vacuum system (for degassing), screw system for continuous discharge, blades cooling arrangement, and automatic valve discharge system. These enhance process control and handling of extremely thick materials.
