Viscous Rubber Solutions Sigma Mixer

Description

A Viscous Rubber Solutions Sigma Mixer, also known as a sigma blade mixer, Z-blade mixer, or double-arm kneader, is a heavy-duty industrial mixing machine specifically engineered for processing highly viscous, sticky, and dough-like materials. It is widely used in the rubber industry for mixing viscous rubber solutions, silicone rubber compounds, butyl rubber, EPDM, SBR, and other rubber-based pastes and masterbatches.

This robust mixer features a U-shaped or W-shaped mixing trough with two counter-rotating sigma-shaped (Z-shaped) blades. These blades operate at different speeds in opposite directions, creating powerful kneading, shearing, folding, and stretching actions. The intensive mechanical force ensures excellent dispersion of fillers, additives, and polymers in high-viscosity rubber compounds — something ordinary mixers simply cannot achieve.

Working Principle of Viscous Rubber Solutions Sigma Mixer

  • Kinematic Mechanics & Bulk Dispersion
    • Blade Synchronization: Twin high-precision ‘Z’-profile elements spin precisely toward one another at differential velocities, establishing a wiping action that continuously transfers the batch axially across the vessel length.
    • Compound Rheological Action: Homogenization is achieved through macro-translation, stretching, folding, splitting, and re-blending. Simultaneously, severe mechanical shear and tearing against the agitators and sidewalls systematically reduce solid agglomerates.

  • Product Extraction Pathways
    • Container Pivoting: The entire mixing bowl can be tilted to dump viscous or heavy finished batches.
    • Bottom Port Drainage: Material can be evacuated via flush-fitted outlet valves situated at the base of the trough.
    • Lateral Screw Augering: A parallel side extrusion mechanism can be activated to push dense material smoothly out of the chamber.

  • Thermal Phase Automation
    • Cycle Progression: Upon the expiration of the required batch sterilization timer, the heating circuit automatically disengages, the pneumatic exhaust flap opens, and the cooling stage is instantly initiated.

  • Blade Profile Classifications
    • Tangential Architecture (High Viscosity):
      • Agitators rotate independently within the trough, meeting tangentially with a leading-to-trailing speed ratio typically set at .
      • Engineered for heavy, dense substances such as industrial adhesives, rubber polymers, pigment pastes, and dyes.
    • Overlapping Architecture (Low Viscosity):
      • Agitators cross paths above the central ridge, requiring exact phase lock and identical () rotational speeds.
      • Delivers rapid compartment cross-transfer and lower shear levels, making it ideal for fluid or creeping formulas like cosmetic creams, pharmaceutical ointments, clay coatings, and carbon pastes.

Key Features of Viscous Rubber Solutions Sigma Mixer

  • It features two counter-rotating sigma-shaped (Z-shaped) blades mounted in a W-shaped or U-shaped trough.

  • The blades rotate at different speeds (often in a 3:2 ratio), creating intense shearing, kneading, stretching, and folding actions. This ensures thorough mixing, dispersion, and homogenization without dead zones.

  • The trough is often jacketed for heating/cooling, and many models include vacuum capabilities to remove air bubbles or solvents.

  • Optional extruder screws can be added for continuous discharge of thick materials.

These actions make it ideal for materials with viscosities up to several million centipoises, where standard mixers would fail.

FAQ for Viscous Rubber Solutions Sigma Mixer

Two counter-rotating sigma-shaped (Z-shaped) blades operate at different speeds (commonly in a 3:2 ratio) inside a U- or W-shaped trough. This creates intensive kneading, shearing, folding, stretching, and recombining actions that disperse fillers, additives, and polymers uniformly—something ordinary mixers cannot achieve.

The mixer is offered in Stainless Steel 316, Stainless Steel 304, and Mild Steel. Stainless steel versions can be finished to matt or mirror polish per customer requirements, while Mild Steel models receive one coat of red oxide followed by two coats of epoxy paint.

Models range from ASM-50 (approx. 50 L working / 80 L gross capacity, 5 HP general or 7.5 HP heavy duty) up to ASM-3000 (approx. 3000 L working / 3800 L gross capacity, 100 HP general or 120 HP heavy duty). Power voltage can be adjusted to suit local requirements.

In the tangential design the blades meet tangentially, with the front blade rotating faster. This delivers strong kneading and shearing ideal for high-viscosity materials such as rubber compounds, adhesives, dyes, and pigments. Overlapping blades are better suited to lighter viscosities.

A jacket for heating or cooling can be fitted, complete with mineral wool insulation and cladding. Optional blade cooling arrangements further help manage temperature-sensitive formulations.

Discharge can be manual (hand-wheel operated) or hydraulic (automatic). Additional methods include bottom valves, an extrusion screw system, and automatic valve discharge—all designed to handle thick materials efficiently while minimizing residue.

A minimum gap between the trough inner shell and the blades reduces the chance of material adhering. PTFE shaft sealing provides food-grade compatibility, and the closed chamber with counter-rotating blades eliminates dead zones for uniform dispersion of fillers, additives, vulcanizers, and plasticizers.

While optimized for rubber compounds, it is also applied in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, herbal, Ayurvedic, biotech, cosmetic, and chemical industries for high-viscosity pastes, adhesives, dyes, pigments, carbon pastes, clay coatings, creams, and ointments.

Available options include a liquid spray system, vacuum system (for degassing), screw system for continuous discharge, blades cooling arrangement, and automatic valve discharge. These support controlled temperature, pressure, dust-free operation, and efficient handling of extremely thick materials.
