A Double Arm Sigma Mixer, also widely known as a Double Sigma Blade Mixer, Double Z Blade Kneader, or Sigma Kneader Mixer, is a robust industrial mixing machine engineered for intensive kneading, blending, and processing of high-viscosity, sticky, and dense materials. This powerful equipment stands out in the manufacturing world for its ability to handle substances that conventional mixers simply cannot manage effectively.
At the heart of the Double Sigma Blade Mixer are two specially designed sigma-shaped (Z-like) blades that rotate in opposite directions within a U-shaped or trough-like mixing bowl. These interlocking blades operate at different speeds, creating a unique combination of shear, folding, and stretching actions. One blade typically moves faster than the other, generating intense material movement — pushing the product from the sides to the center and back again. This continuous back-and-forth flow ensures thorough mixing, uniform distribution of ingredients, and excellent dispersion of additives.
The counter-rotating motion produces powerful shear forces that break down agglomerates, eliminate lumps, and create a homogeneous final product. The sigma blade design is particularly effective for heavy-duty applications because it maximizes contact between the blades and the material while minimizing dead zones in the mixing chamber.

A Double Arm Sigma Mixer (also known as Double Sigma Blade Mixer, Double Z Blade Kneader, or Sigma Kneader Mixer) is a heavy-duty industrial machine designed for intensive kneading, blending, and processing of high-viscosity, sticky, and dense materials. It features two counter-rotating sigma-shaped (Z-like) blades in a U- or W-shaped trough that provide powerful shear, folding, and stretching actions, making it ideal for materials that standard mixers cannot handle effectively.
In the tangential design, the Z-shaped blades rotate side-by-side (often at differential speeds like 3:2) and are suited for higher-viscosity materials such as adhesives, rubber compounds, dyes, and pigments, delivering strong kneading and shearing. In the overlapping design, the blades intermesh above the trough saddle at the same speed, enabling faster material interchange for lighter viscosities like creams, ointments, and carbon pastes, though with comparatively lower kneading intensity.
It is widely used in the Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical, Herbal, Ayurvedic, Biotech, Cosmetic, and Chemical industries. It excels at processing dense pastes, creams, ointments, adhesives, rubber compounds, pigments, and specialty formulations that require thorough homogenization.
Models range from ASM-50 (50L working / 80L gross capacity, 5–7.5 HP) up to ASM-3000 (3000L working / 3800L gross capacity, 100–120 HP). Power voltage can be customized to local requirements, with options for general or heavy-duty motors.
The mixing trough is typically jacketed for heating (using steam, hot oil, hot water, or electric) or cooling (chilled water). Mineral wool insulation with cladding enhances efficiency. Optional cored blades or blade cooling arrangements provide additional control for temperature-sensitive materials.
Discharge methods include manual hand-wheel tilting, hydraulic automatic tilting, bottom discharge valves, and extrusion screw systems. These options minimize waste and facilitate easy unloading of heavy, sticky materials.
Construction options include Stainless Steel 304, Stainless Steel 316/316L, Mild Steel, special alloys, or coatings like PTFE and hard chrome. Stainless Steel finishes can be matt or mirror polish, while Mild Steel uses red oxide and epoxy paint. PTFE shaft seals support food-grade compatibility.
It handles extremely high viscosities (up to 10 million centipoise) where other mixers fail, delivers excellent mixing homogeneity quickly, features self-wiping action to prevent material sticking, and provides robust, long-lasting performance under demanding conditions with minimal dead zones.
Popular options include liquid spray systems, vacuum systems, variable frequency drives (VFD), overload protection, screw feeding/discharge, automatic valves, and explosion-proof designs. These allow customization for specific process needs like de-aeration or precise feeding.
It supports GMP compliance through high-grade stainless steel construction with smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces (matt/mirror polish), minimal blade-to-trough gaps to prevent product sticking, PTFE seals for food-grade use, jacketed temperature control, and overall hygienic design suitable for pharmaceutical and regulated industries.
