A Sigma Mixer Extruder, also known as a Sigma Kneader Extruder, Z-Blade Sigma Mixer with Extrusion, or Sigma Blade Mixer Extruder, is a versatile heavy-duty industrial machine designed for intensive kneading, mixing, and extruding highly viscous, sticky, or dough-like materials. It seamlessly combines the powerful shearing and folding action of a traditional sigma blade kneader with an integrated discharge screw extruder, enabling efficient mixing followed by controlled emptying and shaping of the final product in a single unit. This hybrid design makes the Sigma Mixer Extruder an ideal choice for industries handling challenging high-viscosity formulations where standard sigma mixers may struggle with discharge and forming.
The machine features two counter-rotating Z-shaped (Sigma) blades that rotate at different speeds inside a rugged trough, delivering intense tangential kneading, shearing, stretching, and folding actions. This ensures thorough dispersion of ingredients in sticky or heavy pastes.
Once mixing is complete, the integrated extrusion screw activates to push the homogeneous material out through a die or nozzle. This eliminates manual scraping, reduces downtime, and allows precise shaping of the extruded product. Jacketed chambers provide excellent temperature control (heating or cooling), while optional vacuum systems remove trapped air for denser, bubble-free output.
Configuration Type | Operational Mechanics | Velocity Ratio | Viscosity Range & Typical Applications |
Tangential Layout | Paddles spin independently inside the trough, meeting tangentially. | Leading-to-trailing ratio of | Heavy, high-viscosity media including industrial adhesives, rubber polymers, pigment pastes, and dyes. |
Overlapping Layout | Paddles cross paths directly above the center ridge, requiring exact phase lock. | (Identical speeds) | Lighter, free-flowing, or creeping substances such as cosmetic creams, pharmaceutical ointments, clay coatings, and carbon pastes. |

It combines the intensive kneading action of counter-rotating Z-shaped (sigma) blades with an integrated extrusion screw. This allows thorough mixing of high-viscosity materials followed by controlled, automated discharge and shaping through a die or nozzle in a single unit—eliminating manual scraping or tilting in many cases.
Once the material is homogeneously mixed, the extrusion screw (single or twin) at the bottom activates and pushes the product out through a die or nozzle. This enables precise forming and direct feeding into downstream equipment such as pelletizers, calendars, or tubing lines while reducing downtime and labor.
It is designed for very high-viscosity, sticky, or dough-like materials, typically up to 10–20 million cP. Tangential blade designs are especially suited for the highest viscosities (e.g., adhesives, rubber compounds, pigments), while overlapping designs work well for lighter pastes and creams.
The machine features a jacketed trough for heating (steam or hot water) or cooling (chilled water). Optional mineral wool insulation with cladding and blade cooling arrangements provide precise temperature management, making it suitable for temperature-sensitive formulations.
Units are available in Stainless Steel 316, Stainless Steel 304, or Mild Steel. Stainless steel versions can be finished in matt or mirror polish per customer requirements. Mild steel models receive a red oxide primer plus two coats of epoxy paint. PTFE shaft seals ensure food-grade compatibility.
Options include hand-wheel operated (manual) or hydraulic (automatic) tilting of the trough, bottom valves, or the integrated extrusion screw. These choices allow efficient, complete product removal with minimal operator intervention and reduced risk of material stagnation.
Yes. Optional vacuum systems remove trapped air for denser, bubble-free output, while spray systems can be added for liquid addition during the process. Other customizable features include variable frequency drives (VFD), automatic valve discharge, and specialized sealing or feeding mechanisms.
Working capacities range from approximately 50 liters (ASM-50) to 3000 liters (ASM-3000), with corresponding gross capacities. Motor power spans from 5 HP (general duty) up to 120 HP (heavy duty), and voltage can be customized to match local power requirements.
It is widely applied in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, herbal, Ayurvedic, biotech, cosmetic, and chemical industries for processing high-viscosity products such as ointments, creams, pastes, adhesives, rubber compounds, dyes, pigments, and specialty formulations.
Two counter-rotating Z-shaped sigma blades operate with close clearances to the trough walls. Tangential designs rotate at different speeds (typically a 3:2 ratio) for intense shearing and folding of high-viscosity materials, while overlapping designs rotate at equal speeds for faster material interchange in lower-viscosity products. Both create continuous bulk movement, stretching, folding, dividing, and recombining actions.
