Agitator

An Agitator (also known as an industrial mixer or stirrer) is a mechanical device designed to mix, blend, homogenize, suspend solids, disperse gases, or promote chemical reactions in fluids within large tanks or vessels. Agitator are essential in processes requiring uniform distribution of materials, improved heat transfer, or maintenance of suspensions.

Key Components

• Motor and Drive System: Electric motor (often with gear reducer) provides power and controls speed.

• Shaft: A long vertical (or angled) rod transmitting rotation from the motor to the impeller.

• Impeller(s): Blades or vanes that create fluid motion; multiple impellers can be mounted on one shaft.

• Mounting: Typically top-entry (most common), side-entry, or bottom-entry.

• Seals and Bearings: Prevent leaks and support the shaft.

How Industrial Agitators Work

The motor rotates the shaft and impeller(s), imparting mechanical energy to the fluid. This creates flow patterns (axial, radial, or tangential) that circulate the material, generating turbulence or shear to achieve:

• Blending miscible liquids.

• Suspending solids.

• Dispersing immiscible phases (e.g., emulsions).

• Enhancing heat/mass transfer or reactions.

Flow types:

• Axial Flow: Downward/upward pumping (efficient for blending/suspension).

• Radial Flow: Outward pushing (high shear for dispersion).

• Tangential Flow: Circular motion (common in viscous fluids).
