An ETO Sterilizer, also known as an Ethylene Oxide Sterilizer, is a highly specialized sterilization system that utilizes ethylene oxide (EO or ETO) gas to eliminate microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. This advanced low-temperature gaseous sterilization method has become a cornerstone in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries for processing items that cannot withstand the high heat and moisture of traditional steam autoclaves.
An ethylene oxide sterilizer is a sealed chamber or integrated system designed to deliver controlled concentrations of ETO gas under specific temperature, humidity, and pressure conditions. Ethylene oxide is a colorless, flammable gas known for its exceptional ability to penetrate complex materials and packaging. Unlike heat-based methods, ETO sterilization operates at relatively low temperatures (typically 30–60°C), making it ideal for delicate, heat-sensitive, or moisture-sensitive products.
The process is particularly effective because ETO gas can diffuse through barriers, reaching intricate surfaces, lumens, and hard-to-access areas within medical devices. This capability ensures thorough sterility assurance for items that would otherwise be damaged or deformed by conventional sterilization techniques.
Ethylene Oxide Sterilization (Sterilisation) offers various distinct advantages over the conventional steam sterilizers (sterilisers), being a DRY & COLD (operates at 50ºC ) process proves very useful in sterilization of expensive items, also it has got a unique penetration ability, so it is very useful in sterilization (Sterilisation) of expensive and delicate items such as Cardiac catheters, Stents, IOL’s Tubings, various types of scopes, sharp surgical instruments etc., its unique mode of action, also enhances the life of several surgical accessories & disposables items thus making them perfectly reusable.
Types of EO Gas Sterilizers
We are one of the leading EO Gas Sterilizer manufacturer in India. We manufacture below two types of ETO sterilizers:
Semi Automatic Operation Mode EO Sterilizer: In this type of control mode there are analog type buttons onto control panel of the machine through which machine operation procedure will be done.
Fully Automatic Operation Mode EO Sterilizer: This is PLC HMI based fully automatic control mode equipment in which there is HMI mounted onto control panel of the machine through which operation procedure done.

The process typically involves three main phases, controlled by four key parameters: gas concentration, temperature, relative humidity, and exposure time. These factors ensure the EO gas diffuses into the product, reacts with microbial DNA, and destroys viable microorganisms.
Modern systems, like those from Andersen Sterilizers, use innovative “EO-Flexible Chamber Technology” (EO-FCT), which reduces EO usage by up to 90% by evacuating air from a flexible bag, minimizing environmental impact.
An ETO Sterilizer (Ethylene Oxide Sterilizer) is a specialized low-temperature gaseous sterilization system that uses ethylene oxide (EO/ETO) gas to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. It operates in a sealed chamber under controlled temperature (typically 30–60°C), humidity, pressure, and gas concentration. The process includes pre-conditioning (humidification and heating), sterilization (exposure to EO gas), and aeration (removal of residual toxic gas), allowing the gas to penetrate complex materials and packaging effectively.
It is ideal for heat- and moisture-sensitive items that cannot withstand steam autoclaves, including surgical medical devices such as I.V. sets, disposable syringes, disposable surgical sets, catheters, urine bags, cardiac catheters, stents, IOLs, tubings, various scopes, and sharp surgical instruments. It is also used for spices, dried nuts, packed cereals, and other food items to reduce microbiological load.
ETO is a dry and cold process (operating around 50°C) that offers superior penetration into complex shapes, lumens, and packaging. It preserves the integrity and extends the lifespan of delicate, expensive, or polymer-based items that would be damaged by heat or moisture, making them reusable where appropriate.
Key features include modular chamber construction, models ranging from 0.5 to 40 cubic meters, fully automatic PLC-based control or semi-automatic pneumatic operation, contact parts in SS 304/316, easy operation, approximately 8-hour process time, and suitability for reducing microbial load while increasing material lifespan.
There are two main types: Semi-Automatic (with analog buttons on the control panel for manual operation steps) and Fully Automatic (PLC + HMI-based system where the entire cycle is controlled via a touchscreen interface on the control panel).
Models such as AETOS-2.6, AETOS-4.5, and AETOS-8 offer working capacities of 2.6, 4.5, and 8 cu. ft. (70, 125, and 200 liters), various chamber sizes, sterilant cartridges of 40/100/170 grams, warm & cold cycles, in-built aeration, compressed air utility (100 psig), and power requirements of 1–2.5 kW at 220 V single-phase 50 Hz (adjustable).
The process consists of:
It works with nearly all materials, including polymers, resins, and multi-component devices. Primary industries include pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, herbal, Ayurvedic, biotech, cosmetic, and chemical sectors, where it supports sterilization of heat-sensitive medical devices and packaged products without unpacking.
The overall process time is approximately 8 hours. Modern units include in-built aeration facilities to remove residual ethylene oxide after the sterilization phase, ensuring products are safe for use.
It can sterilize packed or palletized items without unpacking, operates below 63°C to preserve device functionality, and provides excellent penetration. This makes it suitable for high-volume production of medical devices (used for billions of devices annually) while preventing healthcare-associated infections.
