A Pigment Paste Sigma Mixer (also called a Sigma Blade Mixer, Z-Blade Kneader, or Double Arm Sigma Kneader) is a heavy-duty industrial mixing machine designed for high-viscosity, sticky, and dough-like materials. It is specifically used to process pigment pastes for paints, inks, coatings, plastics, dyes, masterbatches, and color concentrates, delivering complete pigment dispersion into binders for uniform, high-quality color pastes.
Crude pigment powder (often with grinding aids like salt) is loaded with binders, solvents, resins, or vehicles. The sigma blades then knead and shear the mixture, refining pigment particles, improving dispersion, and forming a smooth high-viscosity paste. This enhances coloring power, dispersibility, gloss, transparency, and purity through mechanical particle breakdown and even distribution.
The mixer is offered in Mild Steel (MS), Stainless Steel 304 (SS 304), and Stainless Steel 316 (SS 316). Custom textural polish options range from fine matte to brilliant mirror gloss. Mild Steel models receive a red oxide primer plus dual-layer protective epoxy coating. PTFE shaft seals support hygienic and food-grade compatible operations.
Models range from ASM-50 (approx. 50 L working / 80 L gross) to ASM-3000 (approx. 3000 L working / 3800 L gross). Motor power options include general and heavy-duty variants (e.g., 5–7.5 HP for the smallest model up to 100–120 HP for the largest). Voltage can be adjusted to local requirements.
Two precisely synchronized, counter-rotating Z-profile (sigma) agitators operate at differential speeds (typically 3:2 ratio in tangential setups) inside a W-shaped trough. This creates intensive kneading, shearing, stretching, folding, splitting, and re-blending. Tangential blades suit high-viscosity sticky materials; overlapping blades (same speed) suit lower-viscosity free-flowing materials.
Customizable heating or cooling jackets manage temperature-sensitive processes (using steam, hot oil, or water). The trough is insulated with high-density mineral wool and protected by external cladding. Optional blade cooling arrangements are also available.
Finished batches can be emptied via manual hand-wheel tilting, automated hydraulic tilting, bottom outlet valves, or a lateral extrusion screw. Automatic valve discharge systems are available as an upgrade.
Available upgrades include specialized fluid/liquid spray systems, vacuum processing setups (for de-aeration), blades cooling arrangement, screw/extrusion systems, and automatic valve discharge. These allow customization for specific production needs.
An ultra-tight clearance gap between the inner trough wall and the blades completely prevents product retention or sticking, ensuring thorough homogenization, minimal waste, and consistent batch quality.
