Also commonly referred to as a rubber dispersion kneader, sigma blade kneader, or Banbury-style internal mixer, this equipment is essential in the rubber manufacturing industry for achieving uniform and high-quality mixing results.
This specialized kneader features powerful rotating blades — typically sigma (Z-shaped) or tangential rotors — housed in a robust mixing chamber. The machine delivers intense mechanical shear, kneading, and dispersive action to break down rubber polymers, fillers, and additives into a homogeneous mass. Also known as a rubber dispersion kneader, sigma blade kneader, or Banbury-style internal mixer, it uses powerful rotating sigma (Z-shaped) or tangential rotors in a robust chamber to deliver intense shear, kneading, and dispersive action for uniform mixing of materials that standard mixers cannot handle effectively.
The machine is available in Stainless Steel 316, Stainless Steel 304, and Mild Steel. Stainless steel versions can be finished to matt or mirror polish as required, while Mild Steel models receive one coat of red oxide and two coats of epoxy paint.
Tangential ‘Z’ type (sigma) blades rotate accurately at different speeds toward each other, transferring product from one end of the trough to the other. This creates bulk movement, stretching, folding, dividing, recombining, and shearing against the blades and side walls, reducing solid particle size and producing a homogeneous mass. Discharge occurs by tilting the container, bottom valves, or an extrusion screw.
Models range from ASM-50 (approx. 50 L working / 80 L gross capacity, 5 HP general / 7.5 HP heavy duty) up to ASM-3000 (approx. 3000 L working / 3800 L gross, 100 HP general / 120 HP heavy duty). Power voltage can be adjusted to customer requirements, and technical modifications are reserved.
In the tangential design, blades meet tangentially with the front blade typically rotating faster (often in a 3:2 ratio). This provides strong kneading and shearing ideal for higher-viscosity materials such as adhesives, rubber compounds, flush colors, dyes, and pigments—unlike overlapping blades, which suit lighter viscosities and offer faster interchange but lower intensity.
A jacket for heating or cooling can be provided, along with mineral wool insulation and cladding. Optional blade cooling arrangements further help manage temperature-sensitive rubber formulations.
Discharge can be manual (hand-wheel operated) or hydraulic (automatic). Additional methods include bottom valves, extrusion screw systems, and automatic valve discharge, all designed to handle ultra-viscous materials efficiently while minimizing residue.
A minimum gap between the trough inner shell and blades reduces the chance of product sticking. PTFE shaft sealing supports food-grade compatibility, and the closed mixing chamber with counter-rotating rotors delivers intense mechanical action for uniform dispersion of fillers, additives, vulcanizers, and plasticizers.
While optimized for rubber compounds, it is also applied in the Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical, Herbal, Ayurvedic, Biotech, Cosmetic, and Chemical industries for high-viscosity pastes, adhesives, dyes, pigments, carbon pastes, clay coatings, creams, and ointments.
Available options include a liquid spray system, vacuum system (for degassing), screw system, blades cooling arrangement, and automatic valve discharge. These support controlled temperature, pressure, dust-free operation, and efficient handling of extremely thick materials.
