EO Cartridge Sterilizer

EO Cartridge Sterilizer

An EO Cartridge Sterilizer is a medical device used for low-temperature gas sterilization of heat-sensitive equipment, such as surgical instruments, electronics, endoscopes, and plastics that cannot withstand steam or high heat. These systems use pre-filled, single-dose cartridges containing pure ethylene oxide (EO) gas, which is released into a sealed chamber to kill microorganisms. The cartridge design eliminates the need for bulky gas cylinders, hoses, or valves, reducing handling risks and waste. EO sterilization is effective for terminal sterilization and is FDA-cleared for healthcare settings, but it requires proper aeration to remove residual gas due to EO’s toxicity.

Key Advantages

  • Safety and Convenience: Cartridges are punctured only after the chamber is sealed under vacuum, minimizing exposure. No CFC/HCFC propellants make them environmentally friendlier.

  • Efficiency: Cycles can be as short as 3.5 hours, with precise dosing to avoid overuse.

  • Low Emissions: Paired with abators (catalytic filters), they reduce EO emissions by over 99%, making them nearly zero-emission.

  • Compatibility: Ideal for delicate items like fiber optics, rubber, and fabrics.

How It Works

  1. Preparation: Load items into the chamber with humidity control.

  2. Vacuum and Gas Injection: Air is evacuated, and the EO cartridge is automatically punctured to release gas.

  3. Exposure: Gas penetrates materials at 30–60°C for 1–12 hours, depending on the load.

  4. Aeration/Purge: Residual EO is removed via heated air circulation.

  5. Abation (Optional): Exhaust passes through a replaceable catalyst cartridge that converts EO to harmless compounds.

Considerations and Safety

  • Regulations: EO is a known carcinogen, so systems must comply with EPA/OSHA limits. Use in well-ventilated areas with monitoring.

  • Alternatives: For non-cartridge EO, consider tank-based systems, but cartridges are preferred for smaller facilities.

  • Maintenance: Replace abator cartridges every 200 cycles; non-hazardous disposal.
