A Jacketed Agitated Reactor (also known as a jacketed stirred tank reactor or jacketed vessel with agitation) is a specialized vessel used in chemical engineering and process industries for conducting reactions under precisely controlled temperature and mixing conditions.
-
Jacketed: The reactor has an outer “jacket” (a cavity or shell) surrounding the inner vessel. A heating or cooling fluid (e.g., water, oil, steam, or glycol) is circulated through this jacket to regulate the temperature of the reactants inside. This is essential for exothermic reactions (to remove heat and prevent runaways) or endothermic ones (to supply heat), and for maintaining uniform conditions.
-
Agitated: It includes a mechanical stirrer or agitator (often with impellers, paddles, or turbines) driven by a motor. This ensures thorough mixing, improving homogeneity, mass transfer, heat transfer, and reaction rates. Baffles are commonly added inside the vessel to enhance turbulence and prevent vortexing.
These reactors are commonly made from borosilicate glass (for lab-scale visibility and corrosion resistance) or stainless steel (for industrial-scale durability and pressure handling). Sizes range from small lab units (5-50L) to large production vessels (up to thousands of liters).
