Stainless Steel Jacketed Reactor With Limpet Coil

Stainless Steel Jacketed Reactor With Limpet Coil

A Stainless Steel Jacketed Reactor with Limpet Coil (often simply called a limpet coil reactor) is a specialized industrial vessel used for chemical processing, where precise temperature control is essential during reactions. It combines features of a traditional jacketed reactor with external limpet coils for enhanced heat transfer.

Key Description and Design

  • The reactor consists of a cylindrical vertical shell with dished (torispherical) ends, typically made from high-grade stainless steel (SS304, SS316, or SS316L) for excellent corrosion resistance and durability.

  • Limpet Coil: Half-pipe or semi-circular coils are welded externally on the shell and bottom dish. These coils circulate heating/cooling media (steam, thermic fluid, hot oil, or chilled water) for efficient indirect heat transfer. Limpet coils provide better heat exchange than standard jackets, especially for high-temperature applications (>150°C), and add structural strength.

  • Jacketed Feature: Many designs include an additional full jacket around the vessel, often combined with limpet coils for dual heating/cooling (e.g., one for heating, another for cooling or insulation).

  • Agitator/mixer (anchor, propeller, or turbine type) ensures uniform mixing.

  • Accessories: Manhole, sight glass, inlet/outlet ports, pressure gauges, thermometer, safety valves, and mechanical/magnetic seals.

Features and Advantages

  • Efficient Heat Transfer: Limpet coils allow faster flow of media, higher pressure tolerance, and better efficiency compared to simple jackets.

  • Temperature Control: Suitable for exothermic/endothermic reactions, heating up to high temperatures or cooling precisely.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel construction ideal for handling acids, salts, and corrosive chemicals.

  • Customizable: Options for insulation, cladding, GMP compliance (for pharma), and automation (PLC control).

  • Safety: Designed for pressure/vacuum operations, with rupture discs and inert gas provisions.

Applications

Widely used in:

  • Chemical and petrochemical industries

  • Pharmaceuticals and bulk drugs

  • Food processing, paints, adhesives, resins

  • Polymerization, condensation, distillation, and hydrolysis processes
