Limpet Coil Jacket Reactor

Limpet Coil Jacket Reactor

A Limpet Coil Jacket Reactor (also known as a limpet coil reactor or half-pipe coil reactor) is a type of chemical reaction vessel used in industries for processes requiring precise temperature control. It features external half-pipe coils welded directly onto the outer surface of the reactor shell (and sometimes the dished ends). These coils circulate heating or cooling media (such as steam, thermic fluid, hot oil, or chilled water) to regulate the temperature of the reactants inside the vessel.

Unlike a conventional full jacket (which surrounds the vessel with a complete outer shell), the limpet coil design uses semi-circular (half-pipe) channels that allow for higher fluid velocity and turbulence, improving heat transfer efficiency.

Key Features and Design

  • The “limpet” refers to the half-round (semi-circular) pipe coils that are welded directly onto the vessel exterior, creating a spiral or helical flow channel.

  • This design allows for efficient heat transfer without a full surrounding jacket.

  • Capacities range from 500 liters to 80,000 liters or more.

  • Materials commonly include stainless steel (SS 304, SS 316) or mild steel, depending on the application.

Applications

Limpet coil reactors are widely used in industries like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, petrochemicals, dyes, adhesives, and food processing for reactions requiring strict temperature regulation to ensure product quality and safety.
