Side Grip Conveyor

A Side Grip Conveyor (also known as a side gripping conveyor, hugger belt conveyor, bottomless conveyor, or side belt conveyor) is a specialized material handling system used in industrial packaging and production lines. It consists of two parallel conveyor belts or chains positioned on opposite sides that gently grip products by their sides, holding them securely while transporting them. This design leaves the top and bottom of the product fully exposed and unsupported (hence “bottomless”).

• Gripping Mechanism: Products are “wedged” or “pinched” between opposing belts/chains, often adjustable in width (via hand wheels or spindles) to accommodate different product sizes without crushing them.

• Configurations: Can be horizontal (for transfers), vertical (for elevation changes, known as elevators/lowerators), inclined, or wedge-style.

• Materials: Often uses urethane gripper chains, timing belts, or table-top chains; frames can be aluminum or stainless steel for food-grade/sanitary applications.

Primary Applications

• Bottom Access: Ideal for printing/coding (e.g., expiration dates, lot numbers with inkjet printers), labeling, inspection, or cleaning the underside of containers.

• Gap Transfers: Smoothly transfers products between two conveyors, eliminating dead plates and preventing jamming.

• Elevation Changes: Lifts or lowers products (e.g., bottles, cans, cartons) over short distances or vertically in compact spaces, where standard inclines would cause slipping.

• Other Uses: Inverting products, spacing/de-pucking, uprighting fallen items, creating walk-thrus/overheads, or metering product flow.

• Industries: Common in food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals, and general packaging for handling bottles, jars, cans, pouches, boxes, or cases.
