It uses a conveyor belt, chain, or slats that wrap around a central drum or structure, allowing efficient elevation changes within a compact footprint. Unlike traditional incline conveyors or elevators, spiral conveyors enable high-throughput vertical movement while minimizing floor space usage.
There are two main types often referred to as “spiral conveyors“:

Design: The conveyor consists of a proprietary slat-type or modular plastic belt with overlapping slats or nesting surfaces, supported by a rolling friction chain (no sliding or wear strips). It wraps multiple times around a central drum or follows a drumless guide rail system.

Operation: Powered by a single drive motor (often at the top or bottom), the belt moves continuously, allowing products to enter horizontally, spiral up/down, and exit horizontally. Many models are reversible and can start/stop fully loaded.

Speed and Capacity: Speeds often exceed 200 feet per minute (60 m/min), with loads up to 10-50 kg/m depending on the model. High-capacity versions handle thousands of units per hour (e.g., bottles in mass flow).

Footprint: Extremely compact—e.g., diameters as small as 585 mm—saving 40-50% floor space compared to incline conveyors.
