The R&D Double Cone Blender, also known as a Lab Double Cone Blender or Small Cone Blender, is a compact and highly versatile mixing machine specifically designed for research and development laboratories, pilot-scale testing, and small-batch pharmaceutical and chemical production.
This laboratory-scale blender is widely used for achieving uniform and homogeneous blending of dry powders, granules, and semi-dry materials. Its unique double-cone design creates a gentle tumbling action that ensures excellent mixing efficiency without damaging sensitive ingredients or generating excessive heat.
It operates on the principle of tumbling (or diffusive/convective mixing) through gravity and rotation:
Material Loading : Powders or granules are loaded into the double-cone-shaped vessel (typically filled to 50–70% of gross capacity for optimal mixing).
Rotation : The vessel rotates slowly around its horizontal axis (driven by a motor, gearbox, and chain sprocket system). Typical speeds are low (e.g., 8–25 RPM) to ensure gentle mixing.
Tumbling Action : As the double-cone vessel rotates:
Materials are lifted by the cone walls.
They cascade, slide, and tumble downward due to gravity (creating a “waterfall” effect).
The conical shape at both ends promotes repeated splitting, folding, and recombining of the material bed.
Axial (lengthwise) and radial (crosswise) movements occur, leading to thorough intermixing.
Homogenization : Continuous rotation causes particles to move in complex 3D patterns (convective + diffusive mixing). This achieves uniform blending in 5–15 minutes with minimal shear force, preserving particle integrity.
Optional internal baffles (paddle-type) can be added to break lumps and enhance mixing for cohesive materials.

The R&D Double Cone Blender (also known as Lab Double Cone Blender or Small Cone Blender) is a compact laboratory-scale mixing machine designed for research and development, pilot-scale testing, and small-batch production. It provides uniform blending of dry powders, granules, and semi-dry materials through gentle tumbling action.
It works on the principle of tumbling (diffusive and convective mixing). The double-cone vessel rotates slowly around its horizontal axis, causing materials to lift, cascade, and tumble due to gravity. This creates repeated splitting, folding, and recombining of particles for homogeneous mixing in 5–15 minutes with minimal shear.
The standard Model DCB-5 has a gross capacity of approximately 8 liters and a working capacity of about 4 liters. It features an interchangeable design, allowing different capacity cones to be attached to the same drive unit for flexibility in lab trials.
It is widely used in:
It is ideal for formulation development and small-batch testing.
The conical shape promotes natural cascading and 3D particle movement (axial and radial) without high shear or heat generation. This preserves particle integrity and is especially suitable for fragile, heat-sensitive, or variable-density materials. Optional baffles can enhance mixing for cohesive powders.
The machine is highly user-friendly with simple controls (start/stop/inch via VFD panel), quick cone interchangeability, and full-access charging port. Mirror-polished interiors and sanitary design allow fast, thorough cleaning—critical for frequent product changeovers in labs.
