Horizontal Filter Press

Horizontal Filter Press

A Horizontal Filter Press refers to specialized industrial filtration equipment designed for solid-liquid separation. There are two primary types commonly associated with this term:

  1. Horizontal Plate Filter Press (also known as Sparkler Filter Press or Zero Hold-Up Filter Press):

    • This is a closed, cylindrical vessel containing a stack of horizontal filter plates (disc-shaped) with filter media (cloth or paper).

    • It’s widely used for clarifying liquids with low solids content, such as in pharmaceuticals, food and beverages (e.g., syrups, oils, chemicals), where a polished, clear filtrate is needed.

    • The design prevents evaporation, oxidation, leakage, and contamination.

  2. Automatic Horizontal Filter Press (e.g., models like Ishigaki LASTA or similar recessed chamber types with horizontal plates):

    • These feature horizontally arranged filter plates that open/close simultaneously, often fully automatic for high-volume dewatering.

    • Commonly used in mining, sludge treatment, and heavy industry for producing dry filter cakes from slurries.

Unlike traditional vertical plate-and-frame filter presses (where plates hang vertically), horizontal designs offer advantages like easier cake discharge, better washing, and compact footprints in certain applications.

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Chemicals
  • Food Products
  • Beverages
  • Distilleries
  • Oil Industries
  • Dairy Industries
  • Paint Industries

Process Operation of Horizontal Filter Press

The liquid is fed into the filter of the machine and it is done under positive pressure. Now, the liquid travels downwards and passes through the opening on the sides of filter plates. The filter media holds back foreign particles and enables only clear filtrate to go past the central channel. This central channel is made by interlocking pressure cups to the outlet. The filtration process continues until the cake holding capacity gets saturated or the filtrate rate gets way slower than it must be. This happens due to decreasing cake resistance.

Our meticulously designed filter press is cost-efficient. And you can bet on its efficiency – it helps save every precious drop.

Note:

  1. The flow rate is mentioned in terms of water with 5% activated carbon with filter media as polypropylene cloth.
  2. Filtration rated depends on viscosity of liquids, quality of filter pads and nature of sediments in liquid to be filtered.
