Limpet Coil Reactor

A Limpet Coil Reactor is a type of pressure vessel used in chemical processing industries for conducting reactions that require precise temperature control. It features an external “limpet coil” — a half-pipe or semi-circular coil welded directly onto the outer surface of the reactor shell. This coil circulates heating or cooling media (such as steam, hot oil, thermic fluid, or chilled water) to transfer heat to or from the reactants inside the vessel.

The name “limpet” comes from the coil’s resemblance to a limpet shell clinging to a rock, as it is tightly welded to the vessel for efficient heat transfer.

Key Features and Design

  • Construction: Typically cylindrical with dished ends, made from stainless steel (e.g., SS 304, SS 316) or mild steel/carbon steel for corrosion resistance and durability.

  • Coil Type: External half-pipe coils (formed by splitting a pipe longitudinally and wrapping it around the vessel). Full penetration welds secure the coil.

  • Advantages:
    • Excellent for medium to high heat transfer needs, especially when media temperatures exceed 150°C (e.g., using thermic fluids).

    • Better structural reinforcement compared to full jackets.

    • Allows heating and cooling in the same vessel (with double limpet coils: one for heating, one for cooling).

    • Suitable for exothermic/endothermic reactions requiring uniform temperature distribution.

  • Comparison to Other Reactors:
    • Unlike jacketed reactors (full external jacket), limpet coils provide targeted heat transfer and are preferred for higher pressures/temperatures.

    • More robust than internal coils, which can interfere with agitation.

  • Processes involving viscous materials or high-pressure reactions.
